Modelling of logistics processes with BPMN 2.0

TCI International Logistics with its headquarters in Hamburg was founded in 1989 in the international forwarding sector for the global market. In order to guarantee logistical success for customers and the company, TCI is constantly expanding. TCI offers excellent services worldwide in all areas of logistics and relies on a global network.

The challenge

The constantly increasing order situation, individual customer requirements for order processing and the advancing digitalisation in the logistics market require efficient order processing that is individually tailored to the customer. This requires lean and transparent work processes and suitable IT system support. The aim is to automate routine activities more strongly and to avoid technical media disruptions due to missing interfaces and the resulting duplicate data entries. Addresses to customers are to be individualised. For an integrated order controlling, monitoring during the entire order processing should be made possible.
TCI International Logistics wants to be able to identify and evaluate fields of action for future target procedures in its order processing and for the further development of the IT application environment. As a starting point for this, TCI has decided to include the current ACTUAL processes.

The project approach

Based on the PTA’s project experience to date, workshops with those involved in the process have proven to be the best method of procedure for process analysis and documentation. In coordination with TCI International Logistics, workshops will be held in blocks of several days for the ACTUAL process startup of the business units Sea Transport FCL/LCL for Import and Export, Land Transport FTL/LTL, on the operational and administrative-commercial level and the results will be simultaneously modelled.
In order to achieve a clear and jointly agreed result in a targeted manner, the process flows are visually displayed. The notation language BPMN 2.0 is used for modelling. This notation is standardised worldwide (ISO/IEC 19510:2013) and has become internationally accepted and proven for the representation of professional and technical process sequences. Further possible benefits for TCI: A technical feasibility or digitalisation by means of a BPM process engine can be realised with BPMN.


Logistics Reference Processes
The logistical reference processes introduced by PTA form the starting point for the process analysis. These are adapted to the current actual workflows of order processing at TCI International Logistics in moderated workshops with all those involved in the process.

The project results

As a result the modelled main processes including detailed sub-processes are available for the current order processing of TCI International Logistics. All human and technical communication flows, process events and business objects are mapped.
The models are linked to each other according to the process-related procedures, so that the modelling tool allows for a quick navigation through the business processes.
With this transparent and structured documentation, fields of action for improvement potential could be identified. Thus, TCI has the possibility to make decisions on digitisation projects and the further development of a suitable Transport Management System (TMS). The process repository is a good basis for the development of future target processes. This process library is the central knowledge base for interdepartmental internal cooperation.
