With the SAP HANA database, SAP offers a database that is completely based on in-memory technology. All operationally used data is stored in the main memory and is immediately available. A conventional database is only used for archiving purposes. This allows enormous performance gains in data processing.
In addition to in-memory technology, SAP HANA also uses column-based data storage. In contrast to the line-oriented data storage of conventional databases, most database operations can be carried out faster on a column-based database.
For the customer, there are particular advantages when processing large data stocks – this is now done much faster. But also insert, change and delete operations are much more efficient in most applications under SAP HANA.
The change to an SAP HANA database already offers decisive advantages under SAP ERP. However, at the latest during the changeover to SAP S/4 HANA, the customer must deal with the transformation to SAP HANA.
