AI-automated attribute lineage documentation

This IT project is part of our digitalization and optimization of our customers’ IT landscape. Through targeted measures, we promote technological progress, optimize cross-system processes and create a sustainable basis for future developments. Our IT reference projects serve as a basis for orientation. They support the reusability of tried and tested concepts as part of project implementation.

Project duration: 25 days

Brief description

The customer maintains the same technical data in multiple locations. Currently, it is not possible to determine at the push of a button which system is the primary source for this data. As part of a Proof of Concept (PoC), we will investigate whether AI can be used to automatically determine which system generates a given attribute, which system consumes it, and through which interfaces it leaves or reaches the customer's core system. A partner phone number is used as the pilot attribute. To this end, a realistic, deliberately scaled-down replica of the core system is built in Oracle PL/SQL. An analysis pipeline is developed that generates an attribute graph from source code and interface contracts and derives a lineage report for each attribute from it.

Supplement

The PoC serves as a preliminary step toward a potential broader implementation: The method focuses on a single pilot attribute but is designed in such a way that it can be applied to other attributes and domains. In addition to the analysis results, the findings include a robust assessment of the limitations of purely name-based search methods, as well as a recommendation for further expansion.

Subject description

The core Oracle system holds the customer's contract and partner data, communicating externally via the CEISeR web service catalog (SOAP, WSDL/XSD). Three access paths must be considered for the pilot attribute 'partner phone number': the A-path (core system as provider), featuring two reciprocal operations within the same service; the E-path (core system as consumer), which is not visible in any core system WSDL; and an internal batch process. The same business attribute bears a different name at each of these three storage locations. Implementation takes place exclusively within the A and E packages. The analysis utilizes a realistic PL/SQL test corpus spanning two schemas and containing deliberately erroneous test data. The evaluation proceeds in two stages: a first run captures each attribute in a graph structure (JSON), while a second run generates a report for each attribute based on this data. In the absence of precedence rules in the code, the attribute is persisted at all three storage locations.
