Database redesign of the central master data application

Brief description

The project is focused on redesigning large parts of the database architecture with the aim of increasing scalability of the database. The following key aspects are implemented: porting the primary keys (PK) to another data type and converting PK generation by using sequences; new conceptual design for persistence and archiving of large data types (XML); redesign of data access by means of dedicated read transactions from the server/client context and the use of stored procedures; redesign of data persistence using stored procedures; identifying ineffective indexes and redesigning them.

Supplement

The customer's master data application is based on a three-layer, service-oriented architecture (.NET-based thin client, application server, MS SQL 2014) and it has been in operation for than 10 years. The system communicates both with other individually implemented systems of the customer and with standard software such as SAP ERP. Due to the dynamic business field, continuous growth of the data volume and increasingly complex business processes, a preliminary project was commissioned to derive measures to enable continued mapping of the constantly changing requirements.

Subject description

The system is used for recording all necessary contracts (purchasing, sales) and the data relevant for these (tariff schemes, profile, technical data) through to settlement and posting of customer documents. The customer's field of activity is not focused exclusively on the procurement of energy, but rather extends to energy consultation, metering point operation, trading energy from feed-in plants as well as representing additional sectors such as water and district heating. In addition, the user group of the system should be extended so that access can also be made possible for third parties. The multi-client capability of the application should be used for this purpose. In the framework of adapting the system, importance is given above all to the ability to react flexibly to innovations and to integrate them.
