Development of an accessible UX wizard for assisted user guidance

Project duration: 3 months

Brief description

A new tool is being developed for an existing web application that securely sends notifications and contribution statements online. This tool reduces a comprehensive form so that users only have to fill in the necessary fields. Based on the user's input, a decision is made as to which fields are displayed so that a suitable form is generated. For this purpose, a user interface is created in which a clear path with the number of steps is displayed, allowing the form to be filled out step by step.

Supplement

To reduce the complexity of the existing main forms, a general concept is being developed that can be applied independently of the respective form. For this purpose, a decision tree is used to query the necessary fields step by step and display them dynamically according to the entries. Decision nodes determine which steps follow, resulting in a clearly structured process. Blocked nodes prevent entries in downstream fields as long as necessary information is missing, ensuring data consistency and avoiding unnecessary strain on the backend. To support users, there is also the option to save the processing status and continue later. Entries are checked directly in the frontend, allowing incorrect formats or missing information to be detected immediately.

Subject description

The structure is organized in the form of a wizard that specifies a clear sequence of steps and makes the number of remaining steps transparent. Dynamic subforms are generated based on the decision nodes, each containing only the relevant fields. The GUI objects are designed so that active nodes can be edited immediately, while blocked nodes clarify the logical dependency on other entries. This creates a stringent, traceable process. To ensure accessibility, the WCAG 2.2 AA guidelines are taken into account. These include appropriate color contrasts, sufficient font sizes, a responsive layout, and the correct use of ARIA labels. All elements are integrated in such a way that a consistent user experience is achieved while protecting the performance of the system.
