Java-based web service for data requests to a retailer's branch back-office system

This IT project is part of our digitalization and optimization of our customers’ IT landscape. Through targeted measures, we promote technological progress, optimize cross-system processes and create a sustainable basis for future developments. Our IT reference projects serve as a basis for orientation. They support the reusability of tried and tested concepts as part of project implementation.

Project duration: 6 months

Brief description

Three web services are being developed to relieve the branch back-office software and provide a modern interface for new systems. These services send requests to the branch back-office system via a messaging system and return the processed data to the calling systems via JSON-based web services.

Supplement

The customer operates a branch back-office system that must run on Java 8. This results in restrictions in the SSL processing of the integrated web services, among other things. To circumvent these problems and provide the connected systems with a modern web service architecture, the web services are outsourced from the back-office system to a separate virtual machine and implemented with a current Java runtime environment. Communication with the back-office system takes place via a messaging system: Web service requests are forwarded as messages to the back-office system and the responses generated there are then returned to the web service users.

Subject description

Due to the mandatory use of Java 8 in the back-office system and the existing web service connections, the web services are outsourced to a separate virtual machine and implemented there with a current Java version. Data exchange takes place via a messaging system, which decouples the services from the back-office system database and processes the load separately from a technical perspective. This decoupling reduces load peaks in the branch back office and increases stability and availability in operational use. At the same time, modern security standards (including SSL/TLS) are met and maintainability is improved. New systems can be connected in a standardized way, reducing integration costs, increasing scalability, and allowing extensions to be implemented more quickly.
