Quality Assurance and Testing of a Migration Tool
Brief description
As part of the phased replacement of a legacy system, contract master data-including all billing-related data such as premiums and invoicing details-is being migrated in stages to the new contract management system, which will continue to be developed in parallel. For each new group of contracts defined by the business department, new requirements are placed on the migration tool, which are systematically tested.

Test cases are created and executed using Azure DevOps. Suitable test data (policies) is identified using tools such as Zen Control Center via SQL queries on the legacy system´s database. Data migration generally involves two sources whose data must be merged: the policy documents and the master data in the legacy system. Test and migration results are verified both in the client of the newly created contract management system and via database queries in Oracle SQL Developer. In addition to the actual migration of contracts, the migration tool also includes the option to copy the data of a contract that is about to expire from the legacy system in order to create a new contract in the contract management system, which replaces the contract in the legacy system. Since the business rules for this so-called ´transfer´ differ from those of a pure migration, this increases the complexity and testing effort.
Subject description
The migration tool automatically transfers contract master dataincluding all billing-related data such as premiums and invoice details-to the newly developed contract management system. The migration tool can be run for a specified set or list of contracts. One data source is an interface to the so-called DataWorld, through which a JSON file is read and further processed for each contract; this file contains the contract data that was previously extracted from the policy document. Essentially, this consists of the insured risks (coverages) in the contract. The migration tool retrieves additional contract data-such as term information, coverage items (including details on sums insured, limits, and premium rates), as well as data on annual premiums, additional premiums, and billing information-from the legacy system´s database.
