Simulation of procedures in a diagnostic laboratory

Project duration: 1 year, 7 months

Brief description

Development of software to simulate the operational procedures in a diagnostic laboratory. Background information: Laboratory instruments communicate with a laboratory information system (LIS) via messages in order to manage sample data. Especially in laboratories of bigger size the amount of information exchange expands disproportionately and, thus the information load to which the LIS is exposed. Objective: The simulation software under development generates and measures an information load against the LIS with the purpose to configure the LIS and the laboratory installation if necessary. Therefore, a virtual laboratory is tested against a LIS by generating virtual samples. Those are then sent through a virtual laboratory with a predefined workflow. Performance measurements are recorded during the simulation and analyzed subsequent to the simulation.

Supplement

The simulation is implemented as follows: The basic functionality of pre-, post- and analytic instruments is reproduced and integrated in a laboratory workflow. The functionality of each instrument includes receiving of racks (including samples), processing (distributing, measuring or archiving samples depending on the instrument type), and sending message accordingly (HL7 or ASTM) to the LIS. Simulation configuration includes the description of the laboratory workflow. To keep this configuration is an essential objective of this project and, therefore, needs requirement analysis accordingly. The simulation software is written in C#. Configurations are stored in XML and are partly extracted from an Oracle database via a PL/SQL interface. The simulation software is written in C#. Subject description

The aim of the project is to develop a software, which is able to test the IT infrastructure of a laboratory prior to the set-up of the laboratory in the real world. Thus the software allows a cost-efficient test environment. Thereby potential issues are discovered at an early stage leading to enhanced long-term customer satisfaction. The simulation software is referencing against customer LIS and maps the behavior of the instruments in use virtually on a high level. Special attention is paid to the crucial functionality of the information exchange with the server and the processing of virtual samples. Moreover, the software provides various performance data (system performance, message response times), which were recorded during single runs, for subsequent analysis. Last but not least, reconfiguration of laboratory scenarios can be easily achieved via XML data exchange or via the Oracle access interface.
