Design and implementation of data archiving for the spare parts database. In the course of reorganizing the spare parts database, data records that are no longer relevant to operational business are backed up separately and then deleted from the inventory system in order to ensure an acceptable performance in the online and batch systems that use this VSAM data pool.
Supplement
In addition to the new PL1 programs and the job streams for reorganizing the spare parts database, which is more than 25 years old and created as a VSAM KSDS file, the new implementation and reorganization result in a new set of instruments for data analysis. The data analysis instruments, which are independent of operational business, are made up of multiple components. On the host side, the spare parts database is divided into multiple files, according to functional issues, with the help of SIRON jobs. Packaged data is unpacked. On the PC side, the data is loaded to a MySQL database. The data is transferred from the mainframe to the PC via FTP. A Web Publishing Framework is used for the documentation. This allows other formats (e.g. HTML, FTP) to be generated and published from XML documents and XSL FO.
Subject description
Over the years, growing quantities of data in the spare parts database have led to increasingly poor performance of the online and batch systems. In addition, the memory requirements are increasing. The previous reorganization method, a PL1 program with multiple subprograms that cannot be executed individually, no longer satisfies the current functional and technical requirements. It is replaced with a multi-stage system that takes different data views into account. An improved backup strategy for the data enables both the rollback that results from a program termination and a functionally necessary, delayed rollback of the data. The archiving method is designed so that the actual archiving can be preceded by its simulation, for testing purposes. The associated job streams are functionally and technically autonomous and are requested as needed.
