Developing a device driver for a hospital database management system
Project duration: 2 years
Brief description
Various devices are used in medical institutions to perform measurements directly on patients. Ideally these results are collected in a central hospital database management system, where they are evaluated. The task of the project is to connect devices to such a system using an ASTM protocol and to prepare the information accordingly.
Supplement
After receiving the description of the communication interface and the communication protocol (ASTM), the existing framework is adapted to the specifications and communication is adapted to the components. After completion of the driver, tests with simulated messages from the device are to be carried out before the driver is tested in one’s own laboratory and the clinic with the real device. If description inconsistencies arise, the driver will be adapted and retested.
Subject description
In medical diagnostics, increasing numbers of devices are being deployed that are for use in stations instead of laboratories. Nevertheless these devices must manage their data centrally or communicate with a laboratory information system. Measurements are often taken at the station (intensive care unit) or directly from the patient (blood gas devices during operations), with the data then being transferred to the database. Special device drivers are required to accomplish this.
