Prototype Labor Simulation

Project duration: 8 months

Brief description

Aim of the prototype is the implementation of a basic laboratory simulation scenario. This includes the client/server communication between a server and different virtual instruments mimicking a basic laboratory workflow. Additionally performance measures are logged and post-processed for later analysis. Further XML based simulation configuration and a rudimentary visualization are implemented.

Supplement

The main features of a laboratory simulation have been rudimentarily implemented in this prototype. Hereby the base functionalities of (pre/post)-analytical instruments are reproduced and integrated into a simple lab workflow. These functionalities include the reception of racks with virtual samples, the appropriated processing including the exchange of HL7 and ASTM messages and the propagation of processed samples to the following instruments. Further the simulation configuration can be extracted and used with the help of SQL queries in conjunction with the Oracle Data Access interface. Subsequently, the configuration data can be also accessed and modified via XML. The behavior of the simulation and interacting components is logged on different levels. During simulation the response times and other performance values are logged which are later analyzed and reported. The simulation is implemented in C#. The simulation run during simulation is visualized using GraphSharp.

Subject description

Aim of the project is software, which can test the laboratory information system, before the real laboratory is built. This software provides an inexpensive testing environment which can detect possible problems early in the development phase and potentially increases customer satisfaction. The simulation software is using the laboratory information system to be implemented and is virtually mimicking the behavior of analytical instruments. Virtual instruments within the simulation must therefore closely mimic real world functionalities i.e. information exchange with the laboratory information system and handling of virtual samples. Further, the software is logging a variety of performance values (system performance, message response times) which are provided for subsequent analysis. Finally, a new laboratory scenario can be easily configured using XML and the Oracle Data Access Interface.
