Sample Workflow Engine within a Laboratory Information System
Project duration: 1 year, 9 months
Brief description
The scope of the project encompasses the implementation of a solution, (connected to the lab information system), to support the sample management of the customer’s pre- and post- analytical instruments. The sample workflow engine (SWE) allows the configuration of automated as well as manual sample processing and can be individually adjusted to the customer’s specific lab workflows. The SWE supports lab workflows based on specific clinical diagnostics (e.g. Hematology). Deviations of the routine workflow are handled on the basis of case specific sample processing rules (e.g. STAT samples, handling of critical test e.g. HIV samples).
Supplement
The approach involves elicitation, analysis and description of the customer’s demands, logical data modelling as well as the validation and verification of the functionality of customer specific workflows.
Subject description
Integration of the sample workflow engine (SWE) in the lab information system (LIS) comprises the processing of barcodes, its identification and registration via scanner and manual input. The system can be configured for the handling of unsolicited samples, which will then be considered during the sorting routine. The system/solution supports the configuration of an optional centrifugation step for preparation of samples. The system/solution determines the sample quality based on analyses of sample pictures and supportss picture information processing and validation. The process step engine coordinates automatic aliquotation for connected instruments. Manual aliquotation of samples with small volume as well as the administration of the desired volume for specific tests is configurable. The system/solution supports the post-analytical archiving and reuse of samples for additional and/or repetitive tests for both, automated and manual workflows.
