Re-engineering water information system - wastewater register

Company portrait

BASF is the world’s leading company in the chemical industry. The portfolio includes chemicals, plastics, performance products, crop protection products and fine chemicals as well as crude oil and natural gas. Located on the Rhine, the Ludwigshafen plant is the world’s largest contiguous chemical site. At the same time, the more than seven square kilometer site is the headquarters of the BASF Group and the center of research.

Wastewater register (ABKA)

The new version of Appendix 22 to the Framework Wastewater Management Regulation, which came into force on January 1, 1992, requires the creation of a detailed wastewater register for all wastewater discharging companies. This was first drawn up for BASF Aktiengesellschaft in Ludwigshafen in 1993, even then with the collaboration of PTA GmbH. The data of all wastewater-relevant companies has since been recorded in the ABKA (wastewater register) system, which is part of the Water Information System (WISS). To create the ABKA, the wastewater-relevant information (bbA quantity, loads, ingredients, etc.) of the respective company and, if applicable, the manufactured products including partial flows must be entered, processed and output. The wastewater register of BASF Aktiengesellschaft distinguishes between two types of cadastral operations:

In the fall of 2003, PTA GmbH and BASF IT Services completed the project to re-engineer the wastewater register. The main objective of the re-engineering project was to enable continuous data collection in the wastewater register so that the data from the companies can be kept up to date at all times.

The collaboration

The many years of experience of PTA and BASF IT Services as well as the good cooperation with each other and with the employees of BASF Aktiengesellschaft have led to this success. Everyone involved was very satisfied with the result.

The tasks of the PTA

The requirement for PTA GmbH was to implement the wastewater register under the coordination of BASF IT Services based on a predefined specification. The two companies worked closely together to design, implement and introduce the application system. In addition, PTA created the system documentation for the subsequent operation of the system by BASF IT Services. Among other things, the following tasks were to be carried out by PTA:

IT design for numerous complex conceptual specifications, for example for
